One-sided Affairs!

One Sided Affairs!
What! Nitish Kumar resigned and became the Chief Minister of Bihar once again with the BJP partnership? What! BJP formed a Government in Goa, even after being the 2nd largest party with the support of other regional parties? Is it really happening? Suddenly All India seems to be painted in Saffron colour. There are now only a few states remaining where either BJP government or NDA supporting parties are not ruling. The situation seems one-sided affairs. But the biggest question is - Can a Government still perform when there is no formidable opposition available? Can a Government still fulfil its poll promises?

With the break in mahagathbandhan in Bihar, the politics of India has changed suddenly. Until yesterday there was an anti-BJP ruling in Bihar. Nitish Kumar broke the alliance with Rashtriya Janta Dal and Congress and formed an alliance with BJP to form the next Government. In an another instance which happened sometime 6 months back where BJP formed the Government with the help of regional parties in Goa, though, Congress was the single largest party.

Almost all big states in India are now under NDA rule.

So, the next question is- why is this is a big issue? When there is no one to stop you from doing whatever you like- that can be either bad or good, it can lead to the dangerous situation sometimes. A good and strong opposition is the bedrock of a democracy. A strong opposition questions government on issues, shapes and helps the government to take decisions and form rules that are beneficial for all sections of the society. A strong opposition works as a vigilant for a democratic society. At present, BJP seems to be the most formidable party. It is winning all elections ranging from municipal to states to central Government elections. It is at its peak of popularity, winning by almost two-third of majorities many times. And the main reason is the weak opposition. Congress has lost its credibility by opposing Government on key issues such as questioning the Clean India initiative, questioning the demonetization move and questioning the surgical strike conducted against Pakistan for destroying terror camps. Also, BJP won most of the Muslim women votes by supporting the quash of triple-talaq. Projecting Rahul Gandhi as the next Prime ministership candidate is costing Congress more. Till now, Rahul Gandhi doesn't seem to be a good PM material. He has not been able to provide the direction which the party needs. BJP has been able to project him more as a scion of Gandhi family than a formidable leader. And it is not that BJP is successful because it has been able to, but because Rahul himself has proved as a weak leader, who lacks vision. It is the time for the Congress party to project a genuine leader from within, which may help the party.

Again, in democracy, it is the people who hold the power. If a government is not doing and fulfilling the poll promises, people will not vote it back into power the next time. If BJP is not performing well and able to provide the direction which the country needs, it will not win the next elections. The election should always be fought on development issues. A whole round development of all sorts of people irrespective of its caste, creeds and religion should be the main agenda of the Government. And, for a country like India, where there are n numbers of caste, creeds and religion are in confluence, it becomes a necessity. Corruption was, is and has been a big issue. A corrupt Government can't win any election. People start looking for the alternatives if current parties are indulging in corruption. And that is how Aam Aadmi Party came to power in New Delhi and Arvind Kejriwal became the Chief Minister. That win was a big lesson for all parties not be indulged in any sort of corruption. And that is how people are the strongest link in a democracy. It doesn't matter if there is a strong opposition available.

The writing is on the wall - "When in Government play developmental politics. Don't indulge in any sort of corruption"

P.S.
The one-sided affair may be the sweetest thing, but can be a destructive force, if not used properly.
